Luxury Hong Kong Apartment Design by Philip Liao

DigsDigs

This luxury contemporary apartment is located in the heart of Lan Kway Fong, Hong Kong in the building complex which was office building once. The design of the apartment based on open plan with clear glass dividers to create private nooks within each room. With a basic colour palette of black and cream, the sculputral elements of the design take centre stage. Every element of the design exudes a simple elegance – from exposed timber planks in the ceiling and large above ground bath tubs. Overall design is Japanese-inspired and luxury is everywhere: bathtubs made of stone, art stands, silk cushions, hi-tech lighting systems and so on. [Philip Liao and Partners]

Modern Beach House With White Exterior Paint by Richard Meier

DigsDigs

This beachfront house in South California is designed by Richard Meier and his partner Michael Palladino for art collectors. It fronts the Pacific Ocean to the south, a courtyard to the west, and the highway to the north. 4,280-square-foot modern house maximize every square inch of the site intelligently and like in many houses in this region the open space creates an exterior living room. The courtyard provides a visual link between the entry, the highway and the ocean beyond. The public areas open onto the courtyard. The living room has double-height ceiling and links the enclosed spaces with the deck and ocean via a full-height wall of glass and sliding doors. The private living areas are hidden on the east side of the entry. Even though there are plenty glamour houses in South California Richard Meier’s beach house design is done in more modern style than many others.

New York based Hariri & Hariri Architecture designed this swimming pool house in suburban Connecticut which easily could become the main house. Its total area is 365 square meters and it’s designed using elements of minimalism and early modernism. The poolhouse’s architecture is in total harmony with the pool and its surroundings. Its main feature is an angular archway that parallels the entire length of the lap pool which isn’t very common for such type of buildings. It gives great protection from the sun during the summer and below it is great place for a pleasant dinner on the open air. At the north part of the pool house is a spa zone where are outdoor and indoor showers. Inside the building are usual elements for entertainment and relaxing: the bar, kitchen, bathroom and and small terraces. Materials that was used during the construction are natural stone and Ipe (Brazilian walnut). [Hariri & Hariri Architecture]

Unique House with Private Garden in Modern Style by Arkhefield

DigsDigs

Balaam house is a private residence on a urban site which is designed in harmony with surroundings and the weather in the region. It is built with using zinc aluminium, concrete, rich timbers and raw battening. Even though this combination of materials isn’t quite usual for other regions it’s very popular in warm countries. Besides capturing river views from different sides, the house also has an awesome private garden which is great play area for children and to relax around a fire pit. Another unique feature of the project is cantilevered pool which provides an eave for the main entrance with its showpiece, glass end. Even though the house hasn’t typical modern design, in this region it looks quite modern. Like many other houses in Australia it also implements “green” and saving technologies like rain water harvesting, solar hot water, passive “heat stack” cross ventilation, solar control glass and so on. Sapphire Gallery / XTEN Architecture

Sapphire Gallery / XTEN Architecture

By Sebastian J — Filed under: Cultural , , , ,

Our friends from XTEN Architecture just sent us one of their latest projects. The Saphire Gallery is a residential gallery addition to a private residente in Los Angeles, California. It is designed to display a private collection of contemporary art while also providing for a home office with views to the sorrounding hills.

More images and architect’s description, after the break.

The owners’ collection includes work by the artists Gregory Crewdson, Uta Barth, Tomoroy Dodge and the video artist Jennifer Steinkamp, and they expressed interest in a new building that would be more than just a container for their expanding art collection. The new building would have be multivalent; with suitable spaces for the artworks, but it would also have to be open to the views, provide for various domestic program spaces, and create a compelling new focal point for the approach and entry to the residence.

The new structure is grafted onto the circulation spine of the existing house and lifted off the ground to provide a minimal footprint. Freeing the ground plane creates a new multi-functional hardscape/landscape area for the family that they use as carport, children’s play area, for art parties and video projections. A structural system of lightweight braced frames was developed. They were factory built and assembled by crane in one day. These trusses rest upon moment frames that clear span the open ground plane in the perpendicular direction, and the floor and roof diaphragms are infilled with typical 2x wood framing. The system proved to be a remarkably simple, flexible and cost-effective way to achieve the program parameters of the project.

The remaining details are simple and direct: casement windows, quartz pebble flooring, steel stairs and railings with perforated panels, infill walls of gypsum board with floor to ceiling pivot doors, full height glass with a ceramic coating for UV and solar protection. An array of photovoltaic cells on the South facing sloped roof produces an average of 15kWh per day, enough to supply all the energy for the new building with a surplus directed towards the main house.

Hotel | ICEHOTEL Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

382092457_0f464b3fdc

To start off, an ice hotel is actually a very temporary structure. Its re made every year and is dependent on specific colder temperatures to sustain its survival. This hotel is aimed at travelers who look for that environmental experience. The lobby is filled with ice sculptures and unique food and beverages that are selected for these conditions. We wonder how their wi-fi system is.

Skate over to the next page for more information and images.

ICEHOTEL

Though there are many ice hotels throughout the world, the original stands, or actually has stood in Jukkasjarvi , Sweden. The whole phenomenon started when a french artist created an igloo to house his exhibit. Local tourists were in need of a place to stay and asked the Frenchmen if they could shack up in his ice box. They laid down some sleeping bags and the rest is really cold history.

Each March, 10,000 tons of ice and 30,000 tons of snow are gathered to create the hotel. Whatever is left over is used for the next years hotel. The Swedes have to wait till about November, when its cold enough, to get the whole building process started. The hotel is not exactly entirely made of ice. There is a frozen steel frame that created the rooms and other areas of the hotel. The hotel is opened to the public in sections until December where the hotel is usually completed.

Again, everything is made from ice, including the cups, the chairs, the beds, a church, a main ballroom and of course a bar, appropriately named IceBar. IceHotel can house up to 100 guests in their private suites.

You definitely can’t go to the Ice hotel and not have questions. We wondered about the beds. Sleeping on ice? Well not exactly. There is some cushion coming in the form of animal skins. And the price? Its actually rather on the cheap side , considering that its a unique experience its about $90 a night.
